When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

When Breath Becomes Air book cover

I spent five hours over the last few days listening to this volume every bit I went most my daily chores: driving around town, cleaning out my pantry, folding piles and piles of laundry. It's a memoir, written by a homo who discovers he has lung cancer shortly before he completes his residency in neurosurgery. He's spent years becoming someone who can help patients navigate the difficult route between life and decease, and suddenly he'southward facing death himself.

Knowing that this volume has become a #1 New York Times bestseller, I expected to discover pronouncements on the significant of life, philosophy, and advice not to squander the time nosotros take. And at that place was a bit of that, but really this books is a story, simply and elegantly told, about a human, his life'southward work, and his life's love. In the start half of the book Kalanithi describes the events that led him to become a doctor as well as some of the cases he treated, cases that demonstrate how exquisitely satisfying and terrifying information technology must be to hold people's lives in your hands every day. In the second half of the book he details his decline from a salubrious neurosurgical resident working 100 hours a week to a patient coming to terms with what life he has left.

This is a short book, small-scale to contain as many memorable quotes as information technology does. The i that's near meaningful to me comes when Paul and his wife discuss whether it would be a good idea to attempt to have a baby before he dies. His wife asks him:

"Don't you retrieve saying adieu to your kid will make your deceasemore painful?"

"Wouldn't it exist great if it did?" I said. Lucy and I both felt that life wasn't near avoiding suffering.

Life isn't virtually avoiding suffering. That'southward an thought I will exist carrying with me.

This was a beautiful book to listen to an as audiobook. Some audiobooks accept a narration that's like watching a play, with lots of drama and performance. The narration for this audiobook, however, was successful in a better fashion: information technology got out of the way of the words and permit me really hear the author'south words. Hearing the book read aloud added an immediacy to this story, every bit if I were listening to a friend share his story with me. The epilogue, written by Paul's wife Lucy, was astonishing equally well.

Petty Bee by Chris Cleave

Little Bee book cover

Little Bee is ane of the hardest books I have read in a long time. I almost stopped reading early on when I realized the book deals with some truly horrific things that happen to 2 Nigerian sisters. At the same time, the story felt and then true I thought I had a responsibleness to keep. I mean, I know this book is fiction, but it's a realistic reflection of things that happen in our world–the same world that I alive in then comfortably–and information technology doesn't experience right for me to turn away from it simply because information technology is uncomfortable. This beautifully written book doesn't just tell united states of america the terrible things that are happening: it shows united states of america dear and laughter and sadness and sacrifice and everything that makes united states of america human amidst the terrors.

Small Corking Things by Jodi Picoult

Small Great Things book cover

Ruth, an African American nurse, is removed from caring for 1 of her patients because the patient'south father, a White supremacist, doesn't want a black adult female touching his child. When things go wrong, Ruth finds herself on trial as a result of his asking. This volume is a folio-turner, a great story with a good plot that makes y'all want to find out what will happen next. At the same time, reading this volume helped me sympathize how race influences my life in ways I'd never idea about before. Written from the perspectives of Ruth, the begetter, and a white lawyer who considers herself as un-racist as you tin exist, this book should be required reading for anyone who thinks racism doesn't exist anymore.

Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave

Everyone Brave is Forgiven book cover

I dearest great historical novels, so I was looking forward to this volume gear up at the cusp of Earth War Ii, but I wasn't expecting it to be and then practiced, or so impactful. More than any other volume I've read, I think this novel gave me a glimpse of what it must have really been similar to live through a war that touched everyone effectually you in a deeply personal way. The overwhelming sadness. The overwhelming tiredness. And the love, and the pity, and the bravery. And it'due south a great love story, too, inspired by the author'due south own grandparents.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

The Poisonwood Bible book cover with tree and sun

Nathan Price, an evangelical Baptist, takes his married woman and four daughters with him on a mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. He'south convinced he will save the world, or at least some of the savages. He's certain he'southward bringing the truth, even when events don't unfold as he expected. This volume has it all: engaging plot, lyrical writing, and memorable characters. But even amend, it will make you lot examine yourself, what you believe, and what you are sure is true.

Crossing to Safe past Wallace Stegner

Coming to Safety book coverI truly love this volume. It'southward a quiet book, in that it'south near normal people doing normal things and living normal lives. It's near a 30 yr friendship, it's about love and matrimony and the mode spouses tin save or destroy one another. Basically, it's about life. I love that Stegner can brand a story that could be about me or you or anyone but as compelling every bit a spy novel or an action picture show (and bluntly, quite a bit improve).
