Aqua Teen Hunger Force: "Aqua Teen Live Action Episode Spectaculeur!" Review

Aqua Teen Hunger Force comes alive!

Wow. What in holy hell was that? You know things aren't good when the head of Adult Swim, Mike Lazzo, feels the episode may have been better served as a DVD extra. The live-action Aqua Teen Hunger Force season finale had its moments, but let's face it, it never lived up to the hype.
For fans of the show and occasional Adult Swim viewers, a live-action season finale looked promising when this episode was announced a few months ago. T-Pain as Frylock, H. Jon Benjamin (credited as Capt. Turd Mahoy) as Shake, David Long Jr. (a look-alike contest winner) as Carl and a red exercise ball as Meatwad all sounded like weird, funny casting choices. But even more importantly, there were possible surprises in store for our heroes that would necessitate a dramatic departure in format.

As it turns out, we didn't get much.

The episode began animated as usual, but quickly changed to live-action as we saw Frylock reading a story written by Shake. What we learned was that Shake was actually a writer named Don Shake who was trying to make a living selling his stories. Thus, what we'd seen as animated portions the show had all been in his imagination. He was looking for feedback on his latest story from his roommate Frylock, but all he got was criticism and a demand to pay his share of the rent. Don Shake stormed off to his room where he vowed to get revenge by destroying Frylock's exercise ball. Instead, the ball started talking (in Meatwad's familiar voice) and he helped Shake with his story. And so the episode followed Shake's quest to finish his story, and essentially the series.

Shake (H. Jon Benjamin) and Meatwad (red exercise ball)

The biggest problem was that much of it missed the attitude we've come to love about the show and that falls squarely on the decision to not use Frylock and Shake's voices in the live-action scenes. T-Pain isn't a bad actor, but we're used to hearing Carey Means do the voice of Frylock. In fact, only when T-Pain's dialogue occasionally slipped into his trademark Auto-Tune voice did any of his lines sound remotely funny. The same goes for Shake, who is voiced by Dana Snyder. None of Master Shake's sarcasm or arrogance came through in H. Jon Benjamin's performance, which is usually the funniest part of the show. The sad thing is that Benjamin is hysterical on shows like Dr. Katz Professional Therapist, Home Movies and The Demetri Martin Show, but his appearance here just didn't work.

However, not everything was a disappointment. We learned that Carl, in both animated and real-life form, is hysterical. Played by look-alike contest winner David Long Jr., the live version of Carl was just as creepy and dirty and funny as his animated counterpart, evidenced by the fact that his constructive criticism of Shake's story consisted solely of wanting him to add boobs and lesbians.

This episode had many things in play which caused it to become over-hyped. Not only were there guest stars and a live-action component, but there was the possibility that this would be the series finale (as it turns out, ATHF will be back for more episodes). With all these extra elements added on, the show lost focus and failed to deliver the one thing that has kept it going for six seasons: jokes.
